When to sow and how to give your plants the best start.

When to sow and how to give your plants the best start.

Spring has certainly sprung here in the last week. I’ve been inspired to start sowing seeds and I’m out preparing the garden for the growing season.
While I was doing that I did take the time to make a couple of videos, in which I share my approach to sowing and growing. I hope you enjoy them.
If you want to see my videos as and when they come out, rather than waiting for me to also get a blog post written … which can be a tad more sporadic  … then consider subscribing to my YouTube channel.

When do you start sowing?

This is something I used to really wonder about, especially as seed packets give such a wide range of potential sowing dates which cover many different regions.
As I say in this video there are practical things to consider, such as frost dates, soil temperature and microclimate.

Of course, you can always find out the best sowing times ‘straight from the horses mouth’ buy asking your garden and seeds when it’s the best time to start sowing. That’s what I do and what I explain in the video below. Click here or on the image below to watch it.

How do you give your seeds a great start in life?

I couldn’t resist sharing my top tips for getting your seeds off to a great start. These aren’t your usual practical seed sowing tips, there are plenty of places to find that out (including www.thehortchannel.com). You could say that my tips are a bit more ‘woo woo’ but I know they work for me and I really enjoy gardening this way, using a variety of techniques to ensure my plants are happy and healthy from the start. Click here or on the image below to watch the video.

Garden Update

Here’s the latest from the garden and polytunnel, including another new project (there’s something about the energy of Spring that means all my ideas are sprouting at once. Fingers crossed I can keep up). Click here or on the image below to watch.

What are your tried and tested tips?

I love finding out how other people plan when to sow and how you get your seeds started. Do you have any special tips to share (maybe you sing to your seeds or play music to them) or do you follow any traditional gardening timing such as planting your sweet peas on Boxing Day / St. Stephen’s Day or sowing potatoes on St. Patrick’s Day?
Let me know in the comments section below and thanks for reading.

Happy gardening,

Ferris.
